К сорокалетию выхода гениальнейшего альбома "Thick As A Brick" Ян Андерсен и группа Jethro Tull выдали его (альбома) продолжение - альбом "Thick As A Brick 2". В котором рассказывается, как могла бы сложиться судьба мальчика Джеральда Бостока, который, будучи десятилетним ребенком в 1972 году, согласно розыгрышу Андерсена, написал тексты для "Thick As A Brick". Теперь Бостоку (несуществующему) исполнилось бы 50 лет... Песни про то, как Босток стал банкиром. Стал солдатом. Стал священником...
Сам по себе, новый альбом этот, кажется, лучшее, что делал "Джетро Талл" с конца 1970-х годов (на мой вкус, конечно).
Тексты нового альбома перевел Виктор Гусев(!). Тот самый футбольный комментатор, над которым любят прикалываться футбольные болельщики.
Чего-то у меня ощущение, что эти переводы станут одним из главных событий в русской поэзии 2012 года. Обалденные переводы.
Гусев-то каков! Кто бы мог подумать?
Переводил он, постоянно совещаясь с самим Андерсеном. Послушал сейчас, как Гусев рассказывал об этом на "Эхе Мск". Запомнился такой сюжет.

"Building nations" - так на американском называют то, чем американские солдаты время от времени занимаются в разных частях мира - в Ираке, в Афганистане и т.п. Как я понимаю, это довольно ироничное определение - строительство наций, помощь ближним своим в строительстве наций.
Гусев говорит, что долго обсуждал с Андерсеном как перевести на русский это "building nations", чтобы смысл не потерялся.
Сделал так:
"Комиссован с фронта. Клиент реабилитации.
Помогаю товарищам, не сделавшим ноги и их потерявшим ради спасения наций".
Неплохо, но все равно - смысл потерялся.

andrey_grafov. Это тема Pussy Rioт. Напомню, что девушки по-прежнему в тюрьмы, их не выпустили, но тема - увы, уходит. andrey_grafov делает жесткий вывод: "Вот так выглядит отработанный правозащитный материал".
Я бы хотел высказаться помягче.
В сотый раз хочу посоветовать тем, кто любит перепощивать что-нибудь "горяченькое", добавляя свои гневные пять копеек – ибо гражданское мужество и все такое.
Дождитесь, когда тема уйдет, и протестуйте. Во-первых, толку будет больше. Во-вторых, не будет ощущения, что вас пользуют, что вы только в общей волне можете плыть.
10:50 am - Риторические игры аля "теодиция"
В непреднамеренно вспыхнувшей дискуссии о 1990-х (непреднамеренно, ибо всего лишь в "дистантном" духе хотел порассуждать о возможностях "реабилитации 1990-х" с учетом текущего "освободительного" политического момента) кто-то употребил короткий, но емкий аргумент.
Процитирую по памяти: "Путин не от хорошей жизни появился и укрепился". Аргумент сей имеет линейную предысторию, в смысле стоит в целой линейке подобных аргументов.
Поклонникам добольшевистской России: "Если все было так прекрасно в "России, которую мы потеряли", то какого хрена в ней случился семнадцатый год?"
Коммунистам-эсэсэсровцам: "Если СССР был таким крутым, чего это он вдруг развалился?"
Аргумент про то, что "если 1990-е были такие славные, откуда взялся Путин?" - из той же серии.
Отрулить от этих аргументов можно с помощью теории, скажем фигурально, "жидо-масонского вмешательства".
Мол, все было хорошо в дореволюционной России, да сука-кайзер большевикам денег на революцию дал.
Всем был хорош СССР, да случилось предательство в верхах.
Все в правильном направлении развивалось в 1990-е, да...
Вот тут каким сюжетом продолжить? Кто и как вмешался и предал молодую демократию, все испортив?
08:47 pm - It isn't just one of your holiday games
Thank you to everyone who weighed in on the name change question. I'm afraid some of you will be disappointed, though. I can't let Varis and Vargas appear multiple times on the same page (much as I couldn't handle Kieran and Kiril), but there will not be any cute in-text reasons for this. (Okay, I say that now, but I may think of one later.) I just have to change it. The first reader who actually notices will get a cookie.
The true lesson to be learned from this is: there's no such thing as a throwaway name. At least if one is writing a series, anyway. One never knows when Random Character Bob will show up again, and when he does, you may regret naming him Bob.
In other news, Agent F just passed out while watching Animal Planet an hour before her bedtime. This is an unlooked for windfall of writing time, if I can manage not to pass out.

I'm two chapters in, and these people are five courses through a twelve course lunch? Seriously? Oh well, we've also had a lot of backstory. It'll work out.

He's hooked: Yahoo Sports's Eric Freeman has written more NBA RPF, this time stories In which Metta World Peace challenges James Harden to a gunfight in the Old West, In which Tim Duncan solves a mystery in Lob City, and In which the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers fight for the future of the nation in Revolutionary America.
In an article Zillow contributed to Forbes (seriously) about the building in Seattle where Fifty Shades of Grey is largely set, a poor unnamed journalism major wrote Posted online by British author E.L. James as a piece of “Twilight” fan fiction, the trilogy of books were picked up by a small publisher out of Australia in 2011.
Alix Bryan, in a piece about 50SoG, attempted to explain: Wondering what fan fiction is? It’s basically recycled and re imagined literature. The quick synopsis is that fans extend the story lines of an original work, and develop already existing characters from a story. Fan fiction isn’t new, but it is quite uncommon for fan fiction to be published and skyrocket to the top of the bestseller list.

Finally, on Metro, Rachel Tarley shared that Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch has admitted that he is well aware of the wide range of fan fiction viewers of the BBC series produce and that he's even seen stories suggesting his character is in a homosexual relationship with Watson.
02:19 am - Brushing up on a language
Imagine that you spent years learning a language, actually taking classes and finishing a complete course at a language school, but then stopped practicing it completely. What would you do to somehow recover your knowledge, given that there is no chance of getting any private classes or going back to school?
I'm more or less used to learning on my own, so far it's worked very well with French and Italian and a bit worse with some other languages. My problem is now Spanish. I used to speak it rather well, that course thing mentioned above finished after C1, so my language was more or less at that level. My listening and reading skills almost haven't dropped since then, I can write relatively well, but whenever it comes to speaking, my brain freezes. If I do grammar exercises from a book, I can still remember most of the rules but those grammar constructions just don't come to mind when I'm writing something. I won't even mention what basic constuctions I use while speaking... Then I've become too shy to talk to native speakers because of the stupid language barrier. We actually communicate with my Spanish roommate like this: she says something in Spanish, I answer in Italian (Italian is the language we use in the house with other roommates).
I guess I can say my Spanish has switched from active to passive. So, the question is: how do you regain active knowledge? Books? What kind of books then? The ones with just grammar exercises don't help much, they just help me remember how much I've forgotten. Typical classroom books? Writing essays? Any tips are welcome)
